Overview

The goal of dentistry is to do everything possible to save and preserve natural teeth. However, in some cases, removing a tooth or teeth is the best way to achieve and maintain oral health. This is especially the case for wisdom teeth extractions, which are necessary for a large number of patients. As board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Edward Delgado and Dr. Michael Kuzmik routinely perform wisdom teeth and other surgical extractions from the comfort of our state-of-the-art Tysons Corner practice.

Many patients visit our practice for the removal of fully or partially impacted wisdom teeth, severely decayed teeth, or teeth that lack sufficient space to fully erupt. As surgical specialists, Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik take every precaution to ensure your treatment is comfortable and efficient and promotes better oral health. We also offer several types of sedation dentistry options to calm even the most nervous patients. If you or your family member needs wisdom teeth extractions, contact Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner in Vienna, VA today for a treatment consultation.

Best Candidates

Tooth extractions may be recommended for you or your loved one if you have wisdom teeth that are trapped in the bone or gum tissues and unable to properly erupt into your mouth. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically begin the eruption process between ages 15 - 25. If these teeth are impacted or otherwise unhealthy, they may cause pain, swelling, infection, and damage to other teeth. Removing impacted or damaged teeth in a timely manner is important to maintaining the health of your gums, bone, and surrounding teeth, and ultimately, your general wellness and the appearance of your smile. Our skilled team uses advanced digital x-rays to evaluate the positioning of wisdom teeth and plan for a successful surgical extraction procedure.

What To Expect

At Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner, we strive to make your treatment relaxed and stress-free. Wisdom teeth extractions are performed in our comfortable surgical treatment rooms, typically under IV conscious sedation or other sedation options. Once you are sedated and ready for your procedure, Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik will make an incision in the gums to gain access to the tooth. As is the case of many wisdom teeth, surgical extractions often require the need to section the tooth and remove it in pieces. Our skilled surgeons take special care to minimize the impact on surrounding tissues during wisdom teeth extractions. Following the removal of your teeth, we will suture the areas and rinse your mouth. Post-op instructions will be provided on how to properly care for your extraction sites as you go through the healing phase.

Recovery

If you are receiving IV or oral sedation for your extraction procedure, you will need to have an adult companion drive you home after your visit. It is very important to avoid using straws, spitting, or smoking as you heal from your wisdom teeth extractions. We recommend avoiding hot and warm foods and beverages and eating a soft food diet for the first few days following your surgical procedure. Our team will review the best way to care for your teeth and gums during the recovery phase. Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik may give you a prescription for pain medication or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers, depending on the extent of your surgery. In addition to a follow-up visit with our doctors, we recommend that you maintain regular routine care with your general dentist.

Insurance Coverage

Wisdom teeth extractions are usually covered, at least in part, by dental insurance. Before beginning your treatment, a member of our business staff will contact your insurance provider and determine your individual coverage amounts. We can also review our convenient payment methods, including third-party medical financing, to help you cover the cost of any out-of-pocket expenses.
