Overview

Dental implants offer a long-lasting option for replacing a missing tooth or teeth. This tooth replacement method integrates with the jawbone to allow for solid biting and chewing abilities and a natural-looking appearance of your smile. The skilled specialists at Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner in Vienna, VA offer their board-certified expertise in the surgical placement of dental implants. Implant dentistry uses implant screws made from titanium or other biocompatible material to serve as the roots of missing teeth. Following the placement of your implants by our surgical team, your restorative dentist can connect an implant crown, bridge, or denture to your dental implants to complete the tooth replacement process.

Dental implants look and act just like real teeth. If you have a gap in your smile from a missing tooth or need a tooth extraction, our skilled, experienced doctors can help you determine if implants are right for you. Contact our Tysons Corner oral and maxillofacial surgery practice today to schedule an implant consultation with Dr. Edward Delgado or Dr. Michael Kuzmik.

Best Candidates

Many patients choose implants over traditional tooth replacements for the long-term advantages they offer. Dental implants can replace a single missing tooth or several missing teeth by connecting individual crowns, a bridge, or a full-arch appliance to implant posts surgically positioned in the jawbone. You may be a candidate for dental implants if you have missing teeth or damaged teeth that require extraction. Dental implants can be cared for just like your natural teeth but do require adequate bone and a healthy oral environment to be successful. During your consultation, Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik will evaluate the health of your jawbone and gums to determine if dental implants are ideal for your smile. If you have bone loss in your jaw, we may need to perform a bone graft prior to implant surgery to strengthen the bone foundation. Dental implants may not be ideal if you use tobacco products, are pregnant, or have certain medical conditions.

What To Expect

To prepare for your dental implant surgery, our doctors will take advanced images of your jaw using our state-of-the-art iCat™ cone beam system. This helps us determine exactly where your implant should be placed within the jawbone. We may also need to extract problem teeth and complete a bone grafting procedure. In some cases, tooth extraction and implant surgery may take place within the same visit.

We will begin your implant procedure by thoroughly numbing the treatment area. Sedation methods may be included to keep you comfortable throughout the process. Using guided implant surgery techniques, our skilled surgeons will create an incision in your gums and then position the titanium post within your jawbone. Depending on the type of implant we are placing, we may suture the gums completely or allow a portion of the implant to remain exposed above the gums. This process will be repeated if several implants are being placed in your mouth.

The dental implant will then be allowed to integrate with your jaw over the next several months. Once Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik determines that your implant is stable and ready to be restored, you will be referred back to your general dentist to have your custom restoration (crown, denture, or bridge) permanently attached and adjusted for a comfortable fit.

Recovery

In the few days following your implant surgery, you may notice some inflammation in your mouth and lower face. Discomfort, bruising, and minor bleeding may also occur following your implant procedure. Our surgical team will inform you of what to expect and whether certain symptoms should be reported to our office. We will also provide instructions on how to care for your implant sites during the recovery phase. Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik may write a prescription for pain medication to help keep you comfortable as you recover. Our team will also schedule a follow-up visit about a week after your procedure to ensure that your implant sites are healing properly.

Once your implant procedure is complete, it is important to maintain good oral care at home with daily flossing and brushing. Dental implants are cleaned and maintained just like your natural teeth. Visiting your general dentist for routine cleanings and exams is also imperative to keeping your dental implants and the surrounding tissues healthy and in top shape.

Insurance Coverage

Depending on your dental insurance company and plan, a portion of your treatment may be covered. We will talk to your insurance company to understand your benefits coverage and determine what your out-of-pocket expenses will be. During your implant consultation visit, we will provide an estimate of your treatment costs and talk with you about the payment methods accepted at our Tysons Corner practice. To help make receiving dental implants more convenient and affordable, we can also give you information on low-interest medical financing through CareCredit®.
