Overview

Tooth loss in the upper jaw can often render some patients unlikely candidates for dental implants. In such cases, a sinus lift can be performed to create the necessary support and bone level that implants require for success. A sinus lift is a type of bone grafting procedure that our board-certified oral surgeons at Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner routinely perform. Inadequate bone height, poor bone quality, or sinus cavities that have expanded into the bone are all conditions that can make tooth replacement with dental implants difficult to achieve. Sinus lifts, also referred to as sinus augmentation, gently raise the floor of the maxillary sinus cavity to allow for the placement of bone grafting tissue. If you have lost teeth in the upper jaw or require extraction of a damaged tooth, a sinus lift may be a key component in restoring your oral health. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Edward Delgado or Dr. Michael Kuzmik in our Vienna, VA oral surgery practice today to learn more about dental implants and sinus lift surgery.

Best Candidates

Patients who may benefit from a sinus augmentation have missing or unsalvageable teeth located in the upper molar and premolar regions of the jaw. They also typically have insufficient bone height and volume in this area due to bone loss and a sinus cavity that sits too close to where the dental implants will be placed. During your visit with our skilled surgical specialists, we will use iCat™ cone beam 3D imaging to review the exact positioning of your sinus cavity, jawbone, nerves, and other structures and determine if a sinus lift is ideal to meet your treatment needs.

What To Expect

A sinus augmentation is an advanced surgical bone grafting procedure that is completed at our state-of-the-art practice by Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik. Our team will numb the treatment area and can provide sedation to help you relax if you are nervous or anxious. When you are comfortable, we will make an incision in the gums to access the bone and floor of the sinus cavity. We will utilize special instruments to gently lift the sinus floor and add bone grafting tissue beneath to hold the newly positioned sinus cavity in place. This also increases the amount of bone available to provide the necessary support for a dental implant. Once the sinus lift procedure is complete, we will suture your gum tissues and rinse the treatment area.

Recovery

Following your sinus lift procedure, our team will provide you with post-op instructions and information on how to care for your mouth during the healing phase. Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik may also give you a prescription for pain relievers and antibiotics to assist you through your recovery. We will schedule a follow-up visit about 1 – 2 weeks following your sinus surgery to remove sutures and assess your healing. After a few months, once your bone graft has fully healed and integrated with your jaw, we can move forward with the process of placing your dental implant.

Insurance Coverage

If you are using dental insurance, we will contact your provider to review your coverage and help maximize your benefits. We will also calculate any personal treatment expenses and review those with you before beginning your procedure. Our Tysons Corner surgical practice also accepts several convenient payment methods, including third-party financing through CareCredit®.
