Overview
Ridge preservation is a bone grafting procedure commonly performed by board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Edward Delgado and Dr. Michael Kuzmik. Used to preserve gum and bone tissue, ridge preservation may be completed immediately following a tooth extraction. This process has many advantages and is often recommended to prepare the bone socket for a future dental implant. Ridge preservation is also used to help maintain the shape and appearance of your mouth following tooth extractions. After our doctors remove a tooth, they perform ridge preservation by adding bone tissue directly to the socket site. Over time, the new bone integrates with the existing bone to form a solid foundation capable of supporting a dental implant. If you need a tooth extraction, contact our highly skilled team at Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner in Vienna, VA to find out more information on ridge preservation and how it may benefit your smile.

Best Candidates
You may be a candidate for a ridge preservation bone grafting procedure if you require a simple or surgical tooth extraction and want to maintain a natural-looking appearance in your jaw. Ridge preservation may also be performed if you wish to replace the extracted tooth with a dental implant. Tooth loss can contribute to bone loss over time. Improving the bone level in an extraction site can help ensure there is adequate bone tissue for an implant and prevent bone loss from affecting your facial shape. Before beginning your tooth extraction procedure, Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik will determine if ridge preservation is ideal to meet your oral health needs.
What to Expect
Our skilled doctors perform ridge preservation procedures in our state-of-the-art Tysons Corner office. During your consultation, we will assess your treatment needs and can review our sedation options if dental anxiety is a concern of yours. On the day of your extraction procedure, we will thoroughly numb the gums, bone, and tooth and gently remove your tooth. Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik will then immediately start the ridge preservation process by filling the tooth socket with bone grafting material. We may also use tissue regenerative materials to encourage a faster healing response and bone tissue integration. The area will be sutured and rinsed and post-op instructions for care will be provided by our team.
Recovery
During the recovery phase, you might experience discomfort or swelling that may be treated with nonprescription pain relievers. If more significant pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or fever occur, please contact our office right away. We may schedule a follow-up visit with our surgical team to assess your recovery and determine when the bone will be ready to support a dental implant.
Insurance Coverage
Ridge preservation bone grafting procedures may be covered in part by your dental insurance plan. Our financial staff will contact your insurance provider to review coverage amounts and determine any out-of-pocket costs before your treatment begins. To help make your care affordable, Drs.
