Overview

Your jawbone is the foundation of your general oral health. If it becomes damaged or deteriorates due to physical trauma, periodontal (gum) disease, or tooth loss, you may require a bone graft to restore health and appearance to your smile. Both teeth and dental implants need adequate levels of surrounding bone to remain healthy and strong. Bone grafting is a common procedure used to rebuild and strengthen the bone in your jaw so that it is healthy enough to maintain a dental implant. At Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner, our board-certified oral surgeons are experts in performing bone grafting techniques to rebuild the jawbone for successful implant results. Schedule your appointment with Dr. Edward Delgado or Dr. Michael Kuzmik at their Vienna, VA practice today for more information on how a bone graft may help you.

Best Candidates

You may benefit from a bone graft if an injury, advanced gum disease, or prolonged tooth loss has caused bone loss in your jaw. When teeth are extracted and remain unreplaced, the jawbone tends to deteriorate over time. Wearing fixed or removable tooth replacement appliances, such as traditional bridges and dentures, can also contribute to bone loss. Bone graft surgery rebuilds the jaw so it can support a dental implant and effectively replace a missing tooth. It also helps to restore a natural appearance to facial and jaw contours that may be affected by bone deterioration. Though a bone graft may take several months to heal and integrate with your existing bone, you will gain a stronger, healthier jawbone that will be able to support dental implants and your natural teeth for better oral health.

What To Expect

The specific process for your bone graft procedure will depend on the source and type of bone tissue used and the amount of grafting needed. Donor bone may be taken from another area of your body, such as your chin, shin, or hip, and is called an autograft. An autograft may be completed in our office using sedation and local anesthesia, or at a hospital facility under general anesthesia. Additional grafting techniques we may use include allografts, which source the bone graft from another human or bone bank. A xenograft bone graft is harvested from an animal, generally bovine. Another option is a biocompatible synthetic bone grafting material known as alloplast. During your treatment consultation visit, our doctors will thoroughly explain your bone grafting options and help you decide on the best plan for your needs.

On the day of your procedure, Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik will use local anesthesia to numb the treatment areas and make an incision in the gum tissue to reach the affected bone. In many cases, we use PIEZOSURGERY® to perform your bone grafting procedure. This advanced technology offers a minimally invasive approach that allows us to treat your bone tissue without impacting the surrounding gum tissue. Your bone graft will be positioned to integrate with your jawbone and fortified with biological factors that promote a faster healing response and tissue regeneration. Your gums will be sutured and treatment area rinsed. In some cases, bone grafting and dental implant surgery may occur within the same visit.

Recovery

Over the next several months, your bone graft should heal and fuse with the bone in your jaw through a process known as osseointegration. During this healing phase, it is very important to maintain a regular home care routine with meticulous brushing and flossing techniques and any additional products recommended by Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik. Our doctors may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics for inflammation or discomfort following your procedure. We will schedule a follow-up visit with our team so that we can check your healing and determine when your sites are ready to receive dental implants.

Insurance Coverage

Bone grafting surgery may be a covered benefit, depending on your dental or medical insurance. Our knowledgeable Tysons Corner team will contact your dental insurance provider to review your benefits and determine if you will have any personal out-of-pocket costs. Before your procedure begins, we will be sure to review your cost estimate for care and discuss our convenient payment options, including third-party financing with CareCredit®.
