Orthognathic (Jaw) Surgery in Vienna, VA

Overview

At times, the upper and lower jaws may not line up together properly. This may result in aesthetic concerns with the facial profile, tooth misalignment, or even difficulty speaking, eating, or breathing with ease. In advanced cases, orthodontic treatment alone may not be sufficient to bring the jaws into a balanced alignment and enhance oral function. As board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Vienna, VA, Dr. Edward Delgado and Dr. Michael Kuzmik are exceptionally skilled at performing corrective or orthognathic (jaw) surgery to treat severely misaligned jaws or facial deformities and increase a person's oral function and appearance. During this procedure, the top and bottom jaws might be repositioned in a more forward or backward position to achieve a proper balance between the upper and lower teeth. If you may be in need of orthognathic jaw surgery, please contact Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner to set up your treatment consultation.

Best Candidates

Individuals of all ages who have minor to severe types of skeletal or dental irregularities could benefit from corrective jaw surgery. In some cases, oral and maxillofacial surgery and orthodontic services may be combined to achieve desired treatment outcomes. To determine the ideal form of care, Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik will evaluate the position of your jaw in relation to your other facial features, your jaw and facial profile, and how your upper and lower teeth meet when you bite together. Our oral surgeons will work closely with your referring dentist or orthodontist to create a comprehensive treatment plan that targets your oral health needs. Jaw surgery may be recommended if you are experiencing:

  • Protruded or recessed chin or lower jaw
  • Congenital deformities
  • Injuries from facial trauma
  • Severely misaligned teeth
  • Trouble swallowing or speaking
  • Difficulty biting or chewing
  • Sleep apnea, mouth breathing, or other breathing issues
  • Severe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders

What to Expect

To create your personalized treatment plan, Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik will conduct a comprehensive consultation. During this visit, we may take x-rays and iCAT™ 3D imaging scans of your mouth and jaw to determine the best surgical approach to take for your needs. Your procedure will be performed under general anesthesia at a hospital or an accredited surgical facility. Our surgeons may augment or reshape the jawbones, cartilage, and other tissues in the lower portion of your face to bring your jaw, chin, and teeth into ideal alignment. When possible, small incisions will be made on the inside of your mouth to minimize the chance of visible scarring. Biocompatible wires, screws, and surgical plates may be utilized to hold your jawbone in its new location. Tissue regeneration and bone grafting techniques may also be used to expedite the healing process and help strengthen your jaw.

Recovery

Following your jaw surgery, a friend or family member will need to pick you up and take you home. Our surgeons generally recommend that you take 1 – 3 weeks to rest and heal prior to returning to school or work. Before your surgery takes place, we will go over post-surgical instructions, including how and when to take pain medication, any diet limitations, and how to clean your mouth. A member of our staff will help you arrange any follow-up visits so that Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik can evaluate your healing. In many cases, you will need to heal for about three months before moving forward with any additional treatments or orthodontic care.

Insurance Coverage

A number of insurance companies may offer coverage toward orthognathic jaw surgery when it is performed to increase oral function. Before your procedure, a member of our financial staff will evaluate your insurance benefits and let you know what you might expect in terms of coverage. For out-of-pocket costs, Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner accepts a variety of payment methods and can help you apply for flexible low-interest financing through CareCredit®.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

Taking a surgical approach to repositioning the jaw can not only improve a protruded or recessed chin, or other aspects of your facial profile, but it can also increase your ability to eat, speak, and breathe with greater ease. Renowned for their experience and expertise in complex oral and maxillofacial conditions, Dr. Delgado and Dr. Kuzmik are extremely skilled at performing orthognathic jaw surgery.
