Overview
Teeth naturally erupt through the gumline and assume their role in your mouth. However, when a tooth (or teeth) becomes trapped or stuck in the jawbone or gum tissues, they are "impacted." Tooth impaction can be caused by a number of things, including the angle of the tooth or insufficient space in the mouth for the tooth to erupt. No matter the cause, our talented team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons at Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner can help you. At our Vienna, VA office, we work with general dentists, orthodontists, and referring specialists so we can give you the ideal solution to treating your impacted wisdom teeth, canines, or other teeth. If you or a member of your family have a concern regarding an impacted tooth, please call our Tysons Corner office to schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Edward Delgado or Dr. Michael Kuzmik.

Best Candidates
Both permanent teeth and baby teeth can become impacted — in fact, any tooth in the mouth can become impacted. However, tooth impaction most commonly affects the canines (often called "eye teeth") and wisdom teeth (the molars located in the back corners of the mouth). An impacted tooth may need to be treated if it is affecting other teeth, causing discomfort, or presenting another health concern. You may be a candidate for tooth impaction treatment if you have:
- Delayed tooth eruption
- Crowded teeth
- Extra (supernumerary) teeth
- Teeth that are positioned incorrectly (tilted or rotated)
- Not enough room in the mouth
- A small dental arch
- Trauma or another injury
What to Expect
To review your impacted tooth, we will take x-rays or 3D images of your tooth using iCAT™ 3D imaging to identify its position. Whether partially or fully impacted, wisdom teeth often require extraction; however, alternative treatments may be utilized with the canines, incisors, or other teeth that are impacted. Potential treatment options could include exposing an impacted tooth so orthodontic treatment can be performed, guiding the tooth into eruption, or no treatment at all and simply monitoring movement or changes. As you age, it is less likely the impacted tooth will erupt so age will also be taken into consideration when deciding how to treat the impacted tooth. If the tooth needs to be extracted, Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik will use local anesthesia or sedation dentistry to ensure your comfort.
Recovery
Our team will provide at-home care instructions for your impacted tooth. If you have oral or IV sedation, you will need to have someone drive you home from your appointment. Swelling, soreness, and other symptoms in the jaw or gum are perfectly normal after your treatment. Dr. Delgado or Dr. Kuzmik may prescribe a medication to help you remain comfortable after your appointment. We suggest avoiding tobacco, using a straw, and spitting in the event you had your tooth extracted. We will also schedule a follow-up visit at our Vienna, VA office to monitor your healing.
Insurance Coverage
Treatment for an impacted tooth may be covered under your dental insurance. A member of our knowledgeable staff will review your insurance details and contact your insurance provider to figure out any out-of-pocket costs. Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner accepts a range of payment options, including medical financing through CareCredit®, to help you fit your oral care fit into your budget.
Treat Impacted Teeth
Having impacted teeth is common. Leaving these teeth untreated, however, can increase the risk of oral health issues, like crowding of the teeth, cysts, infection, pain, and more. We suggest visiting a highly skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeon, like those at Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Tysons Corner, to have this condition reviewed and treated.
